Another legend involves Wu Zixu, prime minister of the State of Wu in the Spring and Autumn period of ancient China. Wu Zixu oversaw the building of the city wall around the capital of Wu (modern Suzhou). Before Wu Zixu died, he told the king’s eunuch to dig the wall when the citizens were in hunger since he had buried lots of rice cakes under the wall. Later the neighbouring State of Yue attacked Wu and its citizens suffered from hunger. The eunuch remembered Wu Zixu's words and ordered the citizens to dig under the wall where they found the rice cakes. Afterwards the people of Wu made niangao every year during the Chinese New Year, in order to remember Wu Zixu and to celebrate the New Year.
